RESPONSIBLE USE

Permissions Checklist Before Converting a Video

Before you save a file, a thirty-second check saves trouble later. Here is a short permissions and safety routine to run before every conversion.

A short pre-download permission checklist

Converting a video is technically easy, which makes it tempting to skip the one question that actually matters: are you allowed to keep this? A quick routine before you click download keeps your personal archive simple and your conscience clear.

Know why you are saving it

Keeping a copy to listen to privately is very different from re-uploading it, using it in a video, or playing it in a public place. The more public the use, the more likely you need an explicit licence rather than a personal-use exception, as our copyright basics explain.

Check who owns the material

Look at the channel and the description. Is this the creator's own upload, a re-upload of someone else's work, or a clip from a film or broadcast? Original creator uploads are usually the safest to save for personal use, while re-uploads may be infringing already.

Read the platform's rules

Every platform has terms about downloading. Respecting those terms is part of using the service fairly, even when the content is free to watch. If a site offers an official offline feature, that is often the intended path.

A five-point pre-download checklist

When in doubt, do not download

If a check leaves you unsure, the safe answer is to stream it instead. You lose nothing but a little convenience, and you avoid a problem that is much harder to undo than to prevent.
